ABOUT
I am fortunate to live near the coast of the Pacific Ocean, an endless source of inspiration. I aspire to create paintings that capture impressions we experience in nature—its beauty, complexity, tranquility, or joy, as well as the sense that it is incomprehensible, providing a connection to something bigger.
Moreover, nature often conveys a feeling of melancholy, a reminder of impermanence that can be both unsettling and strangely comforting. This resonates with Vincent Van Gogh’s belief that “Art is to console those who are broken by life”.
Ideas for my work spark from intimate personal experiences that connect to broader human themes. I remain at all times, open to a striking encounter to ignite that spark.
I work in the tradition of painting from life, immersing myself in the subject and bearing witness to its transitions over time. To remain with a subject intensifies meaning. Each layer of oil colors captures a distinct impression, building toward a final work that reflects the subject’s essence, and the emotional connection I have forged with it.
By delving into the works of artists across time, I find a sense of community and inspiration that fuels my own creative journey.
OVERVIEW
Geraldine Kovats has been painting professionally for nearly thirty years.
Before returning full-time to painting, from 2004-2010, she was a Senior Lecturer and Art and Animation Program Advisor at DigiPen Institute of Technology where a BFA program was being founded.
In addition to teaching, Geraldine made a living in the animation industry; film credits include: Imitation of Life, directed by Mathias Poledna, which debuted at the 2013 Venice Biennale, The Little Prince, which premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, and five Walt Disney animated films. From 2002-2004, she lived and painted in Guanajuato, Mexico, and traveled extensively in Argentina and Chile.
Geraldine holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Academy of Art University where she received two awards of excellence in drawing and painting. A recommendation from a Director at the Academy led to an internship at Walt Disney Feature Animation Studios.
