Biography
Geraldine Kovats is a painter whose lifelong practice centers on an observational engagement with form and presence.
Following a period as a background painter at Walt Disney Feature Animation, she established an independent studio while based in Latin America, later serving as a Senior Lecturer at DigiPen Institute of Technology from 2004 to 2010, developing foundational drawing and painting curricula.
In 2013, she created watercolor environments for Mathias Poledna’s film installation Imitation of Life for the 55th Venice Biennale—a work now held in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Art Institute of Chicago, mumok (Vienna), and S.M.A.K. (Ghent).
Her current studio practice includes a new series of large-format interior oil paintings.
Every subject is a portrait.
My subjects vary, yet they are not separate genres; they are different ways of attending to the world. A painting comes about through sustained looking and repeated encounters. Each work is a result of iterative layering and revision.
I am interested in how feeling is carried through the investigation of light and form. I stay with the work until the painting takes on a life of its own, becoming something other than its subject.
